St. Andrew Chapel, Minterne - Fine Art Print
2025
‘Some places ask nothing of you except that you slow down enough to notice them.’
St. Andrew’s Church in Minterne Magna is one of those places I return to often whilst walking through the Dorset countryside looking for inspiration. It sits quietly within the landscape, never demanding attention, but always offering a kind of stillness that feels difficult to describe properly.
I painted this piece using watercolour and ink with a dip pen, allowing the lines to remain loose and instinctive. I wanted the structure to feel alive rather than rigid, as though it were gently emerging from memory instead of standing perfectly still.
Whilst working on this piece I felt unusually calm. There was a strong sense of nostalgia in the process, not tied to any one specific memory, but more the feeling of familiar places, long walks, soft light, and the comfort of silence in the countryside.
For me, this painting holds both energy and serenity together. The movement of the ink contrasts with the quietness of the church itself, which felt important to preserve. It reminds me that inspiration is often found in the places we pass by slowly and repeatedly, rather than the places we rush to see.
