This was one of those quietly magical days. The kind you don’t plan, but that stays with you long after. It had been raining — that soft, English drizzle that settles into your bones — but my wife and I wrapped up warm and went walking anyway.

We found ourselves climbing a chalky path near Minterne Magna, and at the top, the land opened wide. We stood overlooking Hillfield, with Sherborne and Yeovil stretched out in the far distance, caught in the folds of the hills.

I’d never used oil pastel in a landscape before, but I felt the hedgerows needed something more — more friction, more presence, more texture. So I let the colour speak a little louder, pushing against the calm.

This piece holds that day for me: the wet light, the quiet companionship, the wide view, and the feeling of being both very small and utterly held.
