This piece was inspired by the beautiful garden at The New Inn in Cerne Abbas, a place my wife and I have come to love spending time in. At the centre of the garden stands this remarkable old apple tree, surrounded by the warmth and quiet atmosphere of the Dorset countryside. Painted in May beneath the brightness of the midday sun, I wanted to capture the feeling of light pouring through the branches and the peacefulness of the moment. Beneath the tree sits my darling wife on the garden bench.

I created this piece using watercolour, dip pen ink and oil pastel, allowing spontaneity and expressive mark-making to guide the composition. Soft flowing washes contrast with energetic ink lines and splattered detail, echoing the movement of sunlight, wind and nature within the garden itself. The vivid blues of the sky against the warm oranges and golds of the landscape became central to the emotional tone of the work.

More than a landscape painting, this piece is a reflection of atmosphere, memory and connection to place. It celebrates the beauty of ordinary moments, creative companionship and the landscapes that quietly become part of our lives.
