‘Some places feel suspended between memory and invention.’

This piece was inspired by Bridport Road in Poundbury, a place I have always found visually and conceptually intriguing. There is something unusual about Poundbury’s atmosphere, a relatively modern town built with the language and aesthetics of older architecture, creating a strange and fascinating collision between past and present.

Rather than painting the street in a purely observational way, I became more interested in expressing the tension and energy created by these overlapping worlds. The architecture, movement, colour, and structure gradually dissolved into something far more instinctive and emotional throughout the process.

Created using dip-pen ink, watercolour, and oil pastel, this work emerged almost entirely through intuition and layered mark-making. I allowed lines, washes, and colour fragments to build freely across the surface, letting the composition evolve naturally rather than controlling it too tightly. The result became less about documenting a location and more about capturing the psychological atmosphere of the place itself.
